Mercedes-Benz VS20 (V-Class)
All-wheel drive and differential locks
Context and Challenge
.
Significant further development of the software functions in the engine control unit: adaptation of diagnostic strategies (e.g. AGA diagnostics); Change of NOx sensor supplier etc.
.
High model requirements: Exhaust gas temperature model, NOx modeling to exhaust system output and model-based air system as well as diagnostics contained therein.
.
Enormous amount of data from continuous running to validate new hardware and model-based application for ATM, air path and diagnostics after expiry and robustness. Over the entire endurance run (at least 160 Tkm) of approx. 20 vehicles and up to 3,000 measurement signals per recording.
.
Late and short-term changes in requirements regarding the release of special fuels B20 and HVO, as well as extended altitude approval up to 4,000m without USA testing (due to the corona pandemic).

Solution
.
Use simulation tools such as Matlab & Simulink to create a robust application.
.
Development and adaptation of in-house OBD Statistic Tool (OST) to ensure handling of endurance measurement data and to be able to automatically create statistical evaluations.
.
Relocation of the height protection to the altitude/climate roller in combination with simulation, so that series release can be released without endurance and without testing, even for extreme altitudes up to 4,000m.
.
Development of a test matrix for special fuels, taking into account the influence of emissions due to misbehavior of all OBD-relevant systems.
Added Value
.
Increased cost efficiency through significant savings in test bench resources using simulation for calibration and validation.
.
Use of automated evaluation tools increases efficiency and delivers timely results that contribute to quality improvement in the development process.
.
Compliance with all data end dates without limited series release including special fuels and extended height release under difficult and dynamically changing boundary conditions
